ABOUT THIS EPISODE

In this episode, Courtney Miller joins us to discuss how teaching evolves with experience - and why the most meaningful Pilates classes are not built on perfect performance, but on curiosity, connection and responsiveness.

An international educator and founder of Pilates Republic in Southern California, Courtney reflects on more than two decades in the movement industry. She shares how her teaching shifted when she stopped trying to control every moment of a class and began creating more space to observe, ask questions and respond to the people in front of her.

The conversation explores the pressure instructors place on themselves, how perfectionism can contribute to burnout and why clients are looking for teachers who make them feel seen and supported. Courtney also discusses the opportunities and challenges created by social media, the value newer teachers bring through their own recent learning experiences and why confidence develops over time.

We also discuss creativity and growth across the wider industry, the importance of building an original studio concept, and how Courtney has invested in her team while expanding Pilates Republic. Looking ahead, she explains why innovation should continue - but never at the expense of human connection.

  • Moving from performing a class to responding to the people in front of you

  • Why pauses can make teaching more effective

  • Creating a two-way exchange between instructors and clients

  • How perfectionism and overperforming can contribute to burnout

  • Building confidence without trying to imitate another teacher

  • Why newer instructors may bring greater empathy to their teaching

  • Finding your own voice in an increasingly connected industry

  • Using creativity to solve problems rather than simply appear different

  • Why studio concepts should be built around a clear purpose and community

  • Balancing traditional Pilates with fusion formats and strength training

  • Her experience on building her team and investing in the right people before expanding to multiple locations

  • Why human connection must remain central as technology evolves
