What Is the GYROTONIC® Method?

Ever heard of the GYROTONIC® method? In the world of movement and exercise, the Gyrotonic Method stands out as a unique and transformative system that offers a fresh approach to physical well-being. Developed by Romanian-born Hungarian Juliu Horvath, a former principal ballet dancer, this method combines the fluidity and grace of dance with principles from yoga, gymnastics, swimming, and other disciplines. The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, which includes the Gyrotonic Method and GYROKINESIS®  movement methods, is designed to address the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, and increasing the range of motion. Rhythmic, flowing movement sequences create functional strength without jarring or compressing the joints.

As someone who has spent my lifetime deeply immersed in the world of movement, I have found a profound connection with the Gyrotonic Method. Before moving back to Australia, I lived for 20 years in Vienna, Austria, where I was a professional ballet dancer for 12 years and a movement trainer for eight years. My journey into the world of Pilates began there, where I became a second-generation Classical Pilates Teacher under the tutelage of Romana Kryzanoswka—a transformative experience that not only rehabilitated my injured knee but also provided me with a new career path and the courage to step away from ballet, a career I had left behind just six months prior.

My journey with the Gyrotonic Method began serendipitously. In 2001, I was introduced to it by Michelle Cross, the owner of a Pilates and Gyrotonic Method studio in Vienna, where I worked as a Pilates instructor. While I loved Pilates, I missed the joy, freedom, and flow that dance brought to my life. Practising the Gyrotonic Method filled that void, and I eagerly completed my first GYROKINESIS® teacher training with Juliu Horvath himself in 2002.

Now, as a Gyrotonic Method and GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer and the owner of Hara Beyond Movement Studio in Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia, I've seen firsthand the transformative power of this method. For me, the Gyrotonic Method is not just another form of exercise but a complementary practice that enhances and enriches my Pilates teaching.

Comparing Pilates and the GYROTONIC® Method

While Pilates provides a grounded, straightforward, and precise movement system that aligns the skeleton through push-and-pull dynamics, the Gyrotonic Method delves deeper into the body layers. It requires more concentration and patience, allowing practitioners to feel and sense the technique fully before advancing to more complex exercises. The Gyrotonic Method emphasises holistic, whole-body motion, encouraging connectivity throughout the body and limbs. The method's spirals and intricacies create space in the joints, allowing motion to pass through the entire chain and enhancing fluid core movement through integrated motion. This, in turn, increases strength, flexibility, energy, vitality, and a general sense of calm and well-being.

Many clients describe their experiences with the Gyrotonic Method as remarkably profound. They often express surprise at how something that feels so relaxing can significantly impact their posture and movement. My clients frequently tell me that you must experience it to understand the power of what it does to your body.

I believe Pilates and the Gyrotonic Method can be seen as the yin and yang of movement for the body. Pilates offers structure and efficiency, with its straightforward exercises providing quick results. It is accessible to most people, making it an excellent starting point for anyone looking to improve their physical health. On the other hand, the Gyrotonic Method offers a more intricate and exploratory approach. It challenges the body in new ways, encouraging a deeper energetic connection and awareness of one's physical form.

Benefits of the GYROTONIC® Method

Why Choose the Gyrotonic Method?

One of the key benefits of the Gyrotonic Method is its adaptability. The method's specialised equipment, such as the Pulley Tower Handle Unit, GYROTONER®, Jumping Stretching Board, Leg Extension Unit, and ARCHWAY™, all move the body in different ways and can be customised to suit any person's unique physique and ability. The equipment feels more like a support system, allowing you to find the motion rather than pushing and over-tensing. This versatility makes the Gyrotonic Method accessible to everyone, from elite athletes to individuals recovering from injury or living with a disability. The GYROKINESIS® Method, which can be practised without equipment, further enhances this adaptability, as it relies on the practitioner's proprioception to explore the movement sequences.

My teaching is a mosaic, where each method adds a unique colour, creating a rich and vibrant whole. Just as a mosaic is more beautiful with distinct colours, my teaching shines when I acknowledge and celebrate the unique contributions of Pilates and the Gyrotonic Method, each complementing the other.

Why Movement Professionals Should Explore the GYROTONIC® Method

I encourage Pilates instructors to explore the Gyrotonic Method and consider adding this modality to their toolkit. The Gyrotonic Method offers a unique opportunity to expand one's movement practice, providing a competitive edge and the chance to reach new audiences. The method's emphasis on holistic movement, alignment, and the creation of space within the body offers profound benefits that can enhance any teaching practice. The system has intricate hands-on and movement principles that can take you and your clients to new experiences and can help to re-engage clients for the long term.

Conclusion: A Journey Worth Taking

In conclusion, the Gyrotonic Method has enriched my own life and teaching practice in countless ways. It complements my Pilates practice, offering a different yet harmonious approach to movement. Whether you are a Pilates instructor, a student, a physio, an osteopath, a massage therapist, or simply someone interested in exploring new ways of moving, I invite you to experience the Gyrotonic Method for yourself. It is a journey worth taking that promises to expand your horizons and deepen your connection to your body.
