Private Health Rebates Are Back for Pilates

Private health fund rebates are being reintroduced for Pilates in Australia.

As AUSactive works to establish formal pathways for instructors and studios, the shift extends beyond eligibility.

What’s taking shape is a more defined framework for how Pilates is delivered, positioned, and ultimately recognised.

Two Pathways. One Evolving Industry.

At its simplest, the new framework introduces two pathways:

Clinical Pathway (higher-level rebates)

  • 1:1 sessions or small groups (up to 4 clients for reformer, up to 8 for mat classes)

  • Diploma-level qualification required

  • Minimum 3,000 hours of experience

  • Clinical requirements:

    • Treatment plans

    • Clinical notes

    • Audit readiness

  • Must meet full private health fund standards

Class-Based Pathway (group class model)

  • Group classes (reformer or mat)

  • Delivered in a studio setting

  • Requires:

    • Referral from GP or allied health practitioner

    • Participation in a structured program

  • No online-only classes

  • Often sits under “health improvement” benefits

For clients, this could mean Pilates becomes not just something they choose - but something they can justify staying consistent with.

Experience Alone Is No Longer Enough

One of the biggest shifts is what this means for experienced instructors.

For years, the industry has been built on a mix of certifications, mentorship, and real-world teaching hours.

But under this model, experience alone may not meet the requirements for clinical rebate pathways.

To access clinical rebates, instructors will need:

  • A recognised Diploma-level qualification

  • A minimum of 3,000 documented hours

  • Must be registered with an industry association to obtain provider numbers

Already Have RPL? Here’s Where You Stand

For many instructors, the immediate question is:
“If I’ve completed a Diploma through Recognised Prior Learning (RPL), am I eligible?”

The short answer: potentially but not automatically.

Current guidance suggests:

  • RPL can be used to achieve a Diploma-level qualification

  • Your prior experience may support this process

  • However, final eligibility sits with:

    • Individual health funds

    • Alignment with industry standards

There is strong industry advocacy for prior experience to be recognised but confirmation is still evolving.

The key takeaway:
If you already hold a Diploma via RPL, you may be well positioned but you will still need to meet all other requirements, including the 3,000-hour threshold and compliance standards.

A webinar on RPL is being held next Monday May 5. Further details below.

What This Means for Studio Owners

For studio owners, this isn’t just a compliance update. It’s an opportunity to better understand how rebates can support your clients and, in turn, your business.

Even without operating in a clinical model, these pathways can influence:

  • How long clients stay

  • How often they attend

  • How they perceive the value of your offering

Under the class-based pathway, clients may be able to access rebates when:

  • They have a referral from a GP or allied health practitioner

  • They are participating in a structured program within your studio

For many studios, this creates opportunities to:

  • Strengthen relationships with referring practitioners

  • Improve client retention through subsidised sessions

  • Position Pilates more clearly within the broader health landscape

For those considering expanding into clinical services, the pathway is now more defined, along with the requirements that come with it.

The key is not choosing one path over another.

It’s understanding how these pathways can support the experience you already provide and where they may add value for your clients.

More Than Rebates

This moment isn’t just about financial incentives.

It’s about how Pilates is recognised within a broader health context.

For some, this will open the door to new opportunities and deeper integration into clinical care.

For others, it will enhance the way their existing studio model supports client outcomes and retention.

Either way, the industry is entering a new phase - one that brings greater clarity, credibility, and potential.

And that’s where the real opportunity lies.
