Speir Pilates: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Speir Pilates, led by Andrea Speir, has long been celebrated for its innovative approach to Pilates workouts. With the launch of Speir Pilates Mar Vista in Los Angeles, this flagship studio offers a beautifully balanced blend of classical Pilates, strength training, cardio, and cutting-edge 3D body scanning technology.

The private concept flagship studio is rooted in providing individualized attention in a modern setting. By combining one-on-one sessions with small apparatus classes for up to three participants, Speir Pilates addresses the need for an intimate, results-driven Pilates experience backed by science.

Combining Classical Pilates and Modern Techniques

Andrea Speir has fused elements of classical Pilates with functional strength training and innovative technology to create what she calls a holistic fitness experience. “The addition of weight training, HIIT cardio, and specialized equipment enhances the Pilates practice, ensuring clients enjoy both form-focused movement and dynamic, full-body workouts,” she said.

“We’ve fused heavier weights, kettle bells, Bosu Balls, HIIT and plyometric cardio into our workouts in the Speir group studio, and it’s been so successful to have the option to elevate your heart rate in intervals.

“But it was when I spent my Covid shutdown time studying Physiology at Stanford, that I started to immerse myself in the benefits and results of low and high impact training. I began dreaming of a more individualized Pilates space that allowed the room to combine all of these incredible, educating and effective pieces and fusing them into one space. By adding in elements of heavy lifting and cardio, clients are able to reach their individual goals based on THEIR bodies and needs.

“Sometimes (and almost always) the benefits of cross training are massive.  Menopausal women, for example, need to be adding heavier weight work in for bone density. Now at our new studio, they have a focused and safe option to do just that. This concept in the private space is fusing the gap between large group strength training and cardio fitness and bringing it into the Pilates 1 on 1 training space. When you fuse this with Tower or Cadillac work, it’s a literal joy for your body to experience, and the energy and results are incredible,” she said.

And at the new studio Speir Pilates Mar Vista you’ll find:

  • Strength Training Integration: Heavier weights, kettlebells, and plyometric cardio boost muscle tone and heart health.

  • 3D Body Scanning Technology: Clients receive real-time mobility mapping, providing measurable insights into their form, alignment, and progress.

  • Small Group Offerings: Intimate classes with a maximum of three participants allow for personalized feedback and adjustments.

“My vision is simple, we create a Pilates studio where clients can achieve consistency, see tangible progress, and gain a deep understanding of their bodies,” said Andrea.

The Benefits of 3D Body Scanning Technology

The introduction of 3D body scanning technology is one of the standout features of Speir Pilates. “By mapping a clients range of motion, alignment, and body mobility in real time, this technology gives clients a detailed view of their progress beyond what a scale or mirror can show,” she said.

How It Enhances the Client Experience:

  1. Clear Assessments: Clients see visual data of their movement patterns and alignment.

  2. Goal Tracking: Individualized programs are built around improving form, strength, and mobility.

  3. Progress Motivation: Visual proof of changes helps clients stay consistent and committed to their wellness journey.

Andrea Speir emphasizes that the technology is not about medical diagnoses but about empowering clients to understand their bodies better. Combined with her team's expert instruction, the scans allow for tailored programs that yield measurable, results-driven progress.

“I believe we shouldn’t be thinking in terms of what is and has always been done, but instead following the science. Pilates is so form focused and science based, we will always follow the “why” and integrity of the modality, but listening, watching and learning exercise science as it evolves should also be in the conversation, and that’s another reason why we added the 3D body scanning technology,” she explained.

“By bringing in body mobility mapping, we can scan our clients while they do basic, functional exercises. This shows range of motion, form and alignment. They can see what’s going on in their bodies, and learn about themselves. By continuing on their designed program with us, they will see their form and range of motion improve. This ability to see beyond the scale is exactly what we need. We must always be educating ourselves and our clients simultaneously,” she said.

Innovation Through Collaboration

The studio's success has also been shaped by Andrea Speir’s collaboration with leaders in the HALO and tech sectors. By incorporating the latest advancements in fitness and wellness, Speir Pilates creates a space where science and movement intersect. This approach allows clients to receive the best of both worlds: evidence-based training and the timeless benefits of Pilates.

Andrea’s dedication to staying connected with innovators and evolving her practice ensures Speir Pilates remains at the forefront of the industry. Whether through roundtable discussions, continuing education, or integrating new tools, she believes that collaboration is key to helping clients live stronger, healthier lives. “I feel even more emboldened and inspired to continue to lead with what I feel is the shared goal, and that goal is helping the community find and maintain what will help them live the strongest and healthiest life possible,” she said.

Andrea Speir has been teaching, innovating and educating in the Pilates industry for 19 years. Her passion for creating form focused, inclusive and fun movement can be seen in her California-based studios and digitally on the fitness app Speir On Demand.
